Sound Bites: What Can You Say in Just 9 Seconds?
"9 SECONDS! Are you kidding me?" That is the usual response we get from politicians when we tell them to develop their 9 second sound bites. The response from our clients who are policy makers, managers or scientists is frequently much less polite! Only our sales clients instantly see the value of stating your entire message is such a short time.
Yet, once they see how much power they can pack into just those few words, and, how often they get quoted, everyone is quick to embrace the idea.
So what the heck is a sound bite anyway? Most commonly,
- like other politicians & advocacy groups, you can use it to highlight an issue, or,
- you can use it as a mini-elevator speech to boost your career, cause or campaign.
To highlight issues, US Republican pollster, Frank Luntz, advises politicians to use phrases that, in effect, try to win the argument without taking time for the argument.
