Powerful & Persuasive Delivery Techniques

Voters prefer politicians with lower-pitched voices

According to an Evolution and Human Behavior study at McMaster University in Canada, people, when given a choice, consistently chose a lower-pitched voice .

The Research Approach:

Researchers manipulated archive recordings of US presidents to create lower and higher-pitched versions of each voice and listeners were asked to rate perceived qualities of the speaker.

The researchers played the altered recordings to 125 people and asked them to rate their perceptions of the speakers':

  • attractiveness,
  • leadership
  • potential,
  • honesty,
  • intelligence and
  • dominance
( qualities significant to leaders in all fields).

They also asked subjects which version of the voice they would prefer to vote for, both in peacetime and wartime.

The Results:

In all cases listeners preferred candidates with lower-pitched voices.

It is, then, no surprise that many political candidates take voice training. Former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher is perhaps the most famous for deliberately training to lower her voice.

What does that mean to you?

Whether you are an aspiring politician, or, an established member, you can significantly improve your chances of success and impact on your followers by learning to lower the pitch of your voice --- and, yes, my fellow females, it is definitely important for us.

To get you started, here are some do-it-yourself techniques. The trick, however, is modulation and practice.
  • Sing the scales
Try a la-la-la all the way down the musical register as far as you can go - then go one more note. Repeat two or three times and do the exercise several times a day.
  • "Ing"
More "ing" - this time, open your mouth slightly and say "ing", but, hold the sound for several seconds. You should feel a tiny vibration in your throat and vocal cords. Try it at different pitches until you get one you like. Then repeat two or three times. You'll soon both hear and feel the right pitch for you.
  • Hang out with folks who have lower pitched voices. --- Yes, this actually works: It's a bit like picking up a southern drawl by talking with people who have one.
Try it out, and, send us some feedback on how your constituents, staff or family react to the 'deeper' you.

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image.
